We drove south out of Seattle towards Portland but got sidetracked to Astoria. It the city was where the movie Goonies was set. We found a beach at Fort Steven and set eyes on the Pacific for the first time. The park was in a small town and there was nothing to do. It started raining anyways, so we called it a night after Denny's and a little exploring. In the morning we walked down the beach to a jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River. Justin and Matt went out on the jetty as the tide came in. They were walking along and a sneaker wave came crashing over the jetty and soaked them. The waves continued as they scrambled back for an hour over the wet rocks. Also as the tide had risen, the small trickle they crossed earlier had turned into a large creek. They were already soaked so they just walked on through the knee deep, freezing ocean water. They cleaned up at the rv park's showers and we did laundry in Astoria. On the way to the laundromat, we saw a McDonalds with 29 cent hamburgers on wednesdays. We got out of there with forty of them, cheap food for a few days. We finished seeing the rest of the park in the daylight then headed down to Ecola S.P., where they filmed the surfing scenes for Point Break. It was really cool. There were cliffs on three sides and then the ocean. By this point, it had rained for 9 days, and Portland was no different. We tried to find something fun to do and failed miserably. We went to kinko's to check e-mail and met 2 girls from the area. They took us to a bar called the space room and back to their place to hang out. We got to sleep inside, on couches, it was great. We couldn't find much to do in Portland, so we left. The house from the Goonies and the view of Astoria A sunken ship at the park where we slept Sack of 29 cent McDonalds burgers |
