We spent most of the evening trying to find a place to take a weekly shower. We had to drive down Highway 1 for a little bit, but found a posh little "camping" resort. It was supposedly done in the style of the grand camping of the 1920's, complete with heated shower floors(?). We squeezed in to the basic camp sites by the horse stables for cheap. Their basic campsites had wood platforms to put your tent on, complete with two electrical outlets, very rugged. We drove next to Monterey to see their Monterey Bay Aquarium. That is by far the most amazing aquarium I've ever seen. It is said to be the best in the U.S. They had all kinds of fish from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary which extended up the coast about 100 miles north and south, and about 50 miles out. There is a 8500 foot canyon in the ocean right out from the aquarium. This gave a very wide range of fish to see, from jellyfish to sea otters to a sunfish the size of a car. We planned to have our brakes checked in the morning but had to stay the night and have them checked the next morning. They were allegedly in real bad shape. Regardless, they got 600 dollars out of us for new calipers and resurfacing the drums and rotors. On top of that, we had to wait around for however long with no vehicle. We took a walk along the bay shoreline bike path and stopped all along the way. There were little outcropping of rocks where we found lots of sea anemones, starfish, crabs, some harbor seals, and a couple of sea otters. We were walking with the intention of finding a surf shop to rent boards, but found it too late and it was almost sunset. The van was finished, so we headed down highway 1 in time to see the sun set over the ocean for the first time. We didn't want to miss seeing anything from the dark so we van-camped on the side of the road a few miles up.
