It was kind of a culture shock to go through this third-world country for weeks and then drive for a couple miles across the border to paved roads and street signs and ATMs. We came upon the city of Iquique, Chile. It kind of felt like walking on to a beach in L.A. It was teeming with people and blisteringly hot. We walked around for a bit and wandered upon a good old fashioned KFC. We were so excited to eat some fat-full food that I ate my self sick. (Your food capacity really changes when you eat healthy for a few weeks.) I didn't really realize it until I got pursuaded to jump on the bungee-trampoline. I paid for 5 minutes but could only handle 4, barely. I felt like a total wuss. I found a guy on the beach renting Boogie Boards. The waves were incredible. As I was swimming out to the break point, people kept telling me it was too dangerous for me, but what did they know. Apparently, they knew enough to put me in my place. A couple tries made think I was going to drown and die and the final one tossed me against the rocks. They were super sharp and prickly so I clambered across them as well I could as the waves continued to pummel me. I only realized after I was walking to the towels that the sharp and prickly feeling was mostly caused by tons of sea urchins. The stinger things had numbed my feet allowing me to push the thorns deep into my feet as I walked. I spent a few hours with my Leatherman trying to dig them out. We hung out for another day, healing on the beach and then took of by bus into Peru to catch a plane to Cusco.
